Women's Adire Agbada with Aso Oke
The Women’s Agbada is BINTA’s signature statement piece, an open front silhouette that falls to the knee or below and moves with you rather than against you. The adire body is trimmed along every edge in structural Aso oke, giving the garment enough weight to drape properly instead of flying open as you walk. Wear it open over jeans, palazzo pants or bum shorts for an easy summer layer, or belt it for a more defined shape. It works equally well for graduation, church, an outdoor event or an ordinary Tuesday when you want to feel like yourself. Available in Indigo and White, Gold and Olive, or Plum and Burgundy, with a matching Aso oke cap sold separately.
The Fabric: Hand-Dyed Adire and Aso Oke
The body of this Agbada is adire, Nigeria’s resist dye textile, hand dyed in Abeokuta using tie and fold techniques passed down through generations of artisans. Because every pattern is applied by hand, no two Agbadas carry exactly the same markings, so the one you receive is yours alone. The trim is Aso oke, a handwoven prestige fabric from Yoruba tradition, woven strip by strip on a traditional narrow band loom. In most garments trim is decorative. Here it is structural. The weight of the Aso oke is what allows the Agbada to hang correctly on the body and stay closed in motion, so the two fabrics are doing two different jobs at once, one for beauty and one for engineering.
Care Guide
- Dry clean is preferred for this garment
- If hand washing, use cold water only and handle the fabric gently, do not wring
- Do not bleach
- Do not tumble dry, lay the garment flat to dry away from direct sunlight
- Do not iron directly on the Aso oke trim, use a pressing cloth
- If ironing the adire body, do so inside out on a low setting
- Expect a small release of color in the very first wash on the adire sections, this is normal and part of how resist dye fabric settles
Sizing & Fit
The Agbada is cut generously and worn open at the front, so it is designed to sit comfortably across a range of body shapes rather than fit close to the body. It works for both men and women in the same silhouette, so if you prefer more coverage or a heavier drape, sizing up is a safe choice. If you tend to layer it belted over the body, true to size will give you a cleaner shape.
